Clean eating warfare: how did eating get so ugly?

Clean eating warfare: how did eating get so ugly?

Over the past three years, I’ve watched as tensions have risen in the wellness industry, particularly surrounding clean eating. In a strange turn of events, what seemed to be a positive move towards mainstream healthier eating has become a heated debate on mental health and the negative impact of social media influencers and bloggers.

I’ve wanted to write about the current state of clean eating and the healthy eating movement for a long time now, but I’ve shied away from it because it is a such loaded topic. But I can’t shake the feeling that more awareness is needed on how it’s shaping food trends, diet culture and even health outcomes. So, here’s my two cents.

5 health trends worth following in 2017

You might have already heard that watermelon juice is going to be big news, medicinal mushrooms are set to be the hero superfood of 2017 or that crystal healing is going mainstream.

Personally, I’m not usually a fan of health trends.

They tend to be a result of marketing hype as opposed to lasting, valuable results and reliable research. That said, there are some exciting things on the horizon for health in 2017 so I’ve put together a short list of health tends that are worth following in 2017.

Start the year with a revived morning routine

Start the year with a revived morning routine

I'm not making any New Years resolutions this year. I usually enjoy looking back on the year that was and coming up with a couple of achievable-but-stretchy goals for the next 12 months but I’m not all that interested this year. Instead, I thought a change of routine would make for a welcome shift in gear.

I'm a firm believer that how you spend the first few hours of the morning sets the tone for the rest of your day. A few simple morning rituals before the day gets underway can help us slow down, tune in and take positive action. It's been a while since I shook up my mourning routine so I thought I’d share a few of my morning essentials that I’m revisiting.

Microbiome 101 + The Live Dirty, Eat Clean Lifestyle

The microbiome is a hot topic at the moment, having shaken up the nutrition and medicine worlds. It’s becoming clear that it's central to our health, so I’d say it deserves its moment in the spotlight. There’s a lot of talk about good and bad bacteria, prebiotics, probiotics and so I thought it might be helpful to create a little intro guide.

Bacteria have gotten a bad rap over the years because we tend to think of them as causing disease (pathogenic), but there are in fact lots and lots of neutral or even beneficial bacteria living in on and in you. Gross? Hardly - it’s actually pretty cool. Let me explain...

What is the microbiome?

The microbiome describes the 100 trillion organisms living in and on your body. It might sound strange, but this actually makes for a happy situation when your microbes are well fed and well balanced because they perform a number of vital functions in our bodies. They work symbiotically with our bodies to support our immunity, digestion, homeostasis (internal balance), brain function and weight management, and that’s just a taster of what they do for us! In return we provide them with food in the form indigestible fibre or prebiotics, as well as a delightfully warm and moist habitat to thrive in (okay, so that part is a bit gross).

Bold-Hearted: Chloe Wigan

It's been quite a while between posts so I'm thrilled to mark a return to the blog with inspiration via a young woman courageously making her mark on the world. Chloe Wigan is a young writer and life coach from Australia that entered the self-development field from a young age, which immediately resonated with me. But the reason I'm so excited about this interview is because Chloe is a brilliant example of someone that puts her best foot forward and commits to living boldly even when fear and doubt pops up. It's definitely worth listening to some of the gems she has to offer up, I'd say.

An Introduction to Intuitive Eating + how it can help you end the dieting cycle for good

An Introduction to Intuitive Eating + how it can help you end the dieting cycle for good

You might have heard a fair bit of excitement circulating o Intuitive Eating recently. As more and more people begin to take healthy eating to an extreme, and as a result are struggling with food related fears and the newest eating disorder on the block, orthorexia (an unhealthy preoccupation with foods that are ‘pure’, ‘good' or ‘clean’), intuitive eating is being offered as a solution. Intuitive eating helps people make peace with food and release the need to follow food rules. Obviously, this is a good thing. So let’s get you better acquainted with the concept - I’ll be your Food Cupid ;)

Intuitive eating is a way of eating where you make food choices based on your body’s inner cues, with the understanding that your body has an innate wisdom of how to nourish itself.

Intuitive eating has a lot in common with mindful eating, but it is slightly different in that it has a stronger focus on challenging negative food associations and using your own intuition as a tool for making nutritional choices, as opposed to just slowing down and raising your awareness whilst eating (though that’s definitely part of it).

How to Harness the Power of Intentions + Goals

How to Harness the Power of Intentions + Goals

It might seem a little late to post about goal-setting for the new year, but if we're honest, I don't think most of us give it much serious thought until we're a couple of weeks in and have a better feel for what we want from the year ahead. I find that intentions and goals tend to have a pretty different vibe about them, but in a very literal sense there are some important differences that I want to point out too.

When you know the difference between goals and intentions, you'll also see that it affects the way that we use them as well. And although goals and intentions are different, they can be used to complement each other.

Side note: I actually wrote this blog post way back in October 2014 as part of my first freebie for my tribe members but after a couple of plot twists the eBook never made its debut, so instead I'm dusting it off today to share with you. I've updated it slightly but this is essentially a snippet into exclusive content for my tribe (lucky you!).
